Zwartewaal harbour

For a long time, the fishing industry was the major source of income in Zwartewaal, until the 19th century, when the village found itself in a downward spiral due in part to the construction of the Nieuwe Waterweg. At the beginning of last century, numbers of inhabitants fell dramatically. These days, Zwartewaal is a part of Brielle Municipality and has been rejuvenated. If you're visiting Brielle, don't forget to check out the Fisheries Museum and combine it with a walk through the cosy little harbour in the town centre, close to Brielse Meer.
